Psalm 7:1-9
1. Trust that there will be a just judgement
When people stop believing in God's just judgement, the may be tempted to take it into their own hands and seek revenge against their enemies.
If you believe in a God who judges justly, then you can leave it in his hands and do what Jesus told you to do: love your enemies.
Lord, I take refuge in you. Please don't let me judge others. Thank you that as I can be confident in your perfect judgement I need never to seek revenge but rather love my enemies and pray for those who persecute me.
Matthew 7:24-8:22
2. Trust in Jesus, to whom God has entrusted all judgement
Jesus tells us that the key difference between the wise and the foolish is that the wise man not only hears the words of Jesus, but he also put them into practice.
Knowledge must lead to action - Our theology must affect our lives or else we are building our live on sand.
The words of Jesus are a call to believe in him (John 6:28-29)
You can have absolute confidence in Jesus' judgement, because he has the authority of God himself. The centurion who believed that Jesus' word alone was sufficient to heal his servant, recognized that as in the army, autho
rity comes from being under authority -so Jesus' authority comes from being under the authority of his Father. The centurion saw that when Jesus spoke, God spoke.
Father, thank you for letting me understand the importance of the foundations in God. I thank you that not only is Jesus able to sympathize with my weakness, but he also died for my sins bearing the judgement for me so that I need not be afraid.
Genesis 19:1-20:18
3. Trust that, in the end, the Judge of all the earth will do right
He gives every opportunity for the only 'righteous' people to leave for the Lord was merciful to them. As seen on the judgement on Lot's wife, if we have left a life of sin, then we must not turn back to it.
God uses us despite our sin because he is merciful and God, in Jesus, has taken the judgement upon himself.
Lord, thank you so much for the difference the cross of Christ makes to the day of judgement. Thank you that I can be confident that, in the end, the Judge of all the earth will do right.

Day 8 - Nothing is Too Hard for the Lord
Proverbs 1:8-19
1. Resisting the temptations
Jesus never tells us to withdraw from the world. The challenge is to be in the world and we are called to resist the temptations of the world around us.
The enticement of the world is very strong. Yet, nothing is too hard for the Lord.
Lord, I pray that in the year ahead you will give me the strength to resist all the temptations of the world and not to be enticed into sin
Matthew 6:25-7:23
2. Living the Jesus lifestyle
'Do to others what you would have them to do you' (7:12)
'Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them'
The great challenge is putting Jesus' words into practice.
How to practice His words?
- Stop worrying and start living: Think ahead, plan ahead, but don't worry ahead. Trust in Heavenly Father to provide.
- Sort out your priorities: Seek God for who he is and not for what he can do for you.
- Do not be judgmental: We are to change ourselves before we try and change other people.
- Persist in prayer: Don't be repetitious, but be persistent
- Choose to live a radical life: on the narrow road leading to life, there's no room for pride, dishonesty, anger, hatred of enemies or forgiveness.
Humility is a road of purity, integrity, honesty and forgiveness
Lord, as I face the challenge of living the Jesus lifestyle this year, thank you that nothing is impossible with you. Fill me today with your Holy Spirit and help me to live the kind of life that deep down I long to live.
Genesis 17:1-18:33
3. Trusting the Lord in difficult times
Lord, help me this year to continue to trust in you. Thank you that, whatever the issues I am facing in my life, nothing is too hard for you.
I thought of my conversation with D. He once asked me why I was so much worrying about little things in life - money, job, family.. I find it difficult not to worry at all because if I don't worry, it almost seems as if I don't care. Pipa says, however, there is a balance between being really concerned and burdened to pray, and being worried. And the answer is really trusting that God hears our prayers and will act.

Day 7 - Your Double Blessing
Psalm 6:1-10
1. Cry out for mercy
Lord, thank you for 'your unfailing love' and mercy. Thank you that you hear my cry and accept my prayer. Be merciful to me, O Lord.
Matthew 5:43-6:24
2. Be merciful to others
Having mercy on others is right at the heart of Jesus' teaching. Love is more than showing mercy, but mercy is an essential part of love.
*3 reasons you should be merciful towards the bad
1) to have mercy on your enemies is to imitate your Father in heaven - you may be children of your Father in heaven
2) to have mercy like this marks you out from the world
- You are called to be different, as the "extraordinary," the hallmark of the Christian.
3) there's a connection between forgiving and receiving forgiveness
- Our forgiveness of others is essential to receiving forgiveness from God. You can't get forgiveness from God without also forgiving others.
*How to express mercy practically in what you do?
1) Prayer!
- Prayer is the acid-test of love.
- When we pray, Jesus teaches us to keep it quite, honest, simple
2) Giving!
- Generosity is a form of having mercy on others. When you help someone out, don't think about how it looks. Just do it-quietly and unobtrusively.
Lord, thank you that you are merciful to me. Thank you that you forgive my sins. Lord, help me always to be merciful to others.
Genesis 14:1-16:16
3. Receive God's mercy
Gods mercy is made possible by
1) receiving God's mercy through Jesus
Jesus's body was broken and his blood was shed so that we could be totally forgiven and receive God's mercy
2) receiving God's mercy by faith
Lord, thank you for your amazing mercy made possible through the one perfect sacrifice of Jesus, our great high priest, dying for me. Thank you that I can never earn your mercy but I receive it as a gift by faith.
Memorable lines:
"The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!" Matthew 6:22-23
This passage tells about 'the importance of an eye,' the importance of having 'an valuing, discerning eye'. It means that if your eye is bad, you don't see the mercy of God; thus, a "good eye" would be an eye that see God's generosity as more precious than money. The good eye sees God and his ways as the great Treasure in life, not money.

Day 6 - Directions for Life
Directions for Life
If you follow God's directions for life, you will enjoy his blessing and bring blessing to others.
Psalm 5:1-12
1. Start each day waiting for directions
The whole day has a different dimension as you 'wait expectantly' like David.
Lord, today I lay my request before you and wait for directions. Lead me, O Lord. Spread your protection over me. Surround me with your favor as with a shield.
Matthew 5:21-42
2. Follow Jesus' directions for life
Jesus' directions in the Sermon on the Mount are like a 'highway code' for a life of blessing.
Radical lifestyle: He challenges us to be ruthless in dealing with every wrong attitude, thought, word and action. Our words should be words of blessing, not anger. The simple moral fact is that words kill.
We need to guard what we do with your eyes and our heart.
Take radical action. Jesus speaks of the eye as the starting point of adultery.
Marriage is intended to be a place of blessing one another and a source of blessing for others. This means a life of radical faithfulness within marriage.
Live generously. To return evil for good is demonic. To return good for good is human. To return good for evil is the way of Jesus.
Lord, help me this year to follow your directions for life and to spread blessing wherever I go.
Genesis 11:10-13:18
3. Trust God to direct you one step at a time.
In the journey of life God offers to accompany you and direct you one step at a time into a life of blessing.
God's rescue plan for humanity is passing the blessing on.
The church is blesses not for is own sake but in order to bring blessing to the whole world. If you have been blessed by God, it is not for your own selfish indulgence or self-congratulation; it is in order that you can be a blessing to others.
In stead of becoming discouraged, depressed or angry when people disappoint us, God wants us to lift up our eyes, look around, ant trust him to lead us into an even better situation. He wants us to fix our eyes on him, not on the work of the enemy, because he has plans to bless us.
You are called to live under God's blessing and bring blessing to those around you.
Lord, help me this year to follow your directions, one step at a time, to live under your blessing, and bring as much blessing as I can to everyone around. Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness. make straight our way before me.

Day 5 - All Good Things
All Good Things
We all seek happiness. We are all searching for love, peace. But so often we look in the wrong places. God is the source of all good things.
Psalm 4:1-8
1. The source of joy and peace
People think money, possession or success will be the answer for joy and peace but these are delusions and false gods. True joy and peace are to be found in a relationship with God.
Prosperity, despite the apparent security it brings, does not necessarily lead to peaceful sleep. Only in God's will can we truly dwell in safety.
Lord, let the light of your face shine on me. Fill my heart with joy of your presence and grant me peaceful sleep.
Matthew 4:23-5:20
2. The source of God's favor and true happiness
The 8 Beatitudes (beautiful attitudes) Jesus highlights and receive God's favor and blessings:
1) Be spiritually desperate for God

The Holy Spirit brings love and unity across churches, languages and nations.
Lord, may we never seek to make a name for ourselves or our own church, denomination or movement. Rather may we seek to glorify your name. Pour out your sprit, O Lord, on the church as on the day of Pentecost. May there be a reversal of Babel. May there be an end to disunity. May your Spirit and the values of the kingdom of God bring love, joy, peace, true happiness and unity.

3) Be content with who you are

Day 4 - Battles and Blessings
Battles and Blessings
The Christian life is 'battle and blessing, battle and blessing.... battle and blessing...'
Rick Warren thinks that the Christian life is on two tracks: at any given moment in life there are usually blessings, but also battles to face.
Proverbs 1:1-7
1. Listen to steer through battles and blessings
Proverbs are pragmatic and wise advice learnt from a lifetime of experience.
They help you attain 'wisdom and discipline' - two vital aspects of life, which do not happen overnight.
Wisdom is the 'art of steering' through the battles and blessings of life, and living skillfully in whatever conditions you find yourself.
Wisdom as Joyce Meyer says, is choosing to do now what you will be happy with later on.
Wisdom starts with the fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of knowledge. The fear of the Lord can be translated reverence which means to respect and honor the Lord as God.
The most important lesson you can learn about life is to start with God.
Lord, help me to learn the art of steering through the battles and blessings that lie ahead.
Matthew 4:1-22
2. Learn how Jesus dealt with battles and blessings
Jesus faced three powerful temptations:
-Instant gratification (economic)
People do not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God
Although bread is necessary it is not enough on its own. We need regular spiritual food even more than regular physical food
- Attention seeking (religious)
a temptation to do something dramatic though not productive to attract attention
Do not put the Lord your God to the test.
-Wrong means (political)
Even in a devastating situation, Jesus was not daunted. He was fearless and courageous in the face of the battles. Life is not just a matter of defensively seeing off the attacks; there are also positive advances to make.
Lord, help me to follow the example of Jesus in battle and blessing. May I learn your word so I can respond to temptation and be courageous in proclaiming the message of Jesus.
Genesis 7:1-9:17
3. Learn how others have coped with battles and blessings
Christian should be positive people; the blessings outweigh the battles.
- Creation: Human beings are created in the image of God; there's a nobility and dignity about all human life. Treat every human being with respect and dignity.
- Fall: God's judgement came because of the seriousness of sin: every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood
- Redemption: Those who are in Christ are safe. 'Prosper! Reproduce! Fill the earth!
- Glorification: everlasting covenant into eternity
Lord, thank you that ultimately your blessings far outweigh the battles. Help me to remember that my light and momentary battles are achieving for me an eternal glory that far outweigh them all.

Day 3 - Talk As You Walk
Psalm 3:1-8
1. Walk with you head held high
God does not want you to be downcast - constantly looking at the regrets behind you, the problems around you and the sin within you. Rather, he wants you to lift up your head and see the help above you - to walk with your head held high, and your eyes fixed on him.
David was able to say, 'I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side.' In spite of all the troubles, he seems to have a deep peace - like a lake where there may be rough waves on the surface, but deeper down there is a great stillness.
Lord, I pray for the year ahead that you would help me to walk with you daily in the way of peace, with my head held high, trusting you to supply all I need for the day ahead.
Matthew 2:19-3:17
2. Walk in step with the Holy Spirit
Meaning of walking 'in step with the Spirit':
1) Get refined in the fire
The Holy Spirit will come like a refining fire to bring power and purity in your life. Knowing the refining fire of the Spirit in this life means that you can be free form the fear of the fire of judgement when Jesus returns.
2) Be filled with peace
The fruit of the Sprit is peace
3) Be assured of your adoption
all of us that through what Jesus has done for us, we too are sons and daughters of God: You receive the spirit of adoption
4) know that you are loved by God
God's love for you is poured into your heart by the Holy Spirit
5) Feel his pleasure
Lord, thank you that you give me your Holy Spirit to refine me, to give me peace, to assure me that I am a child of God, to know your love and to feel your pleasure. Help me to walk in step with the Spirit.
Genesis 4:17-6:22
3. Walk in relationship with God
Human beings are the pinnacle of God's creation. God created us to walk in relationship with him.
Evil starts in our thinking and imagination - that is, in our hearts. It is a case of 'garbage in, garbage out.' We need to watch not just our actions but also our thoughts, attitudes, motives and imagination.
Lord, help me to be righteous and blameless in my thoughts, words and deeds, walking with you in a close relationship. Help me to do everything you tell me to do.

Day 2 - First Questions
Psalm 2:1-12
1. The first question in the psalms is about Jesus
The safest place to be in life is close to Jesus.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
Lord, thank you that as I look to the year ahead and all the potential challenges, opportunities and possibilities, the safest place to be is in you.
Matthew 2:1-18
2. The First question in the New Testament is about Jesus
The Magi recognized that Jesus was the fulfilment of all the hopes and dreams of the people up to his birth.
Jesus is the one who fulfils all God's promises.
Lord Jesus, today I want to bow down and worship you. I want to offer you everything I have -my life, my all.
Genesis 2:18-4:16
3. The first question in the Bible is about God's goodness
God gave to humankind everything they could possibly want. The whole created world was made for us to enjoy. Every possible need was catered for.
the beautiful gift of marriage - the lifelong union of a man and a woman in which sex, another of God's beautiful gifts, is to be enjoyed with intimacy and freedom, without guilt or 'shame.' 'a helper suitable for him'
We're created to converse with God, not the devil. The devil, in the form of the serpent, fools Eve into thinking that there will be no consequences to her sin.
4. The first question God asks in the Bible is about you
God did not give up on Adam and Eve. He came looking for them, wanting the relationship to be restored. His blood was shed so that you and I could be forgiven and our relationship with God restored.
5. The first question human beings ask is about responsibility
The result of the fall is a broken relationship with God.
Try to avoid arguments. You will rarely win one and they are so destructive.
We cannot exempt ourselves from responsibility for what is happening around us - in our city, nation and the world. Not only do you have responsibility towards your fellow human beings, but it is your privilege to bring blessing and joy to your friends, family and all those around you, and to make a difference in the lives of as many people possible.
Lord, thank you that you created this wonderful universe for us to enjoy. Forgive me for the times that I have fallen for the devil's lie that I cannot trust you. Thank you that you are always searching for me, and that through Jesus my relationship with you is restored. Help me this year to fulfil the potential I have to make a difference in other people's lives.

Day 1 - New Year's Resolutions
Psalm 1:1-6
1. Delight in the Bible
If you 'delight' in God's Word and 'meditate' on Scripture 'day and night,' your life will be blessed.
Happiness comes from what happens to you.
Blessing is what happens to you through knowing God and meditating on his words.
God promises you fruitfulness and prosperity, though not necessarily material prosperity.
He reminds us of the transitory nature of that prosperity.
The key to lasting -and ultimately eternal- fruitfulness and vitality lies in your relationship with God.
Lord himself will watch over you.
Lord, thank you for your wonderful promises a I resolve to make a regular habit of delighting in your word and meditating on it.
Matthew 1:1-25
2. Focus on Jesus
Resolve to focus on your life on Jesus.
Whatever your past, however broken your life may seem right now, God can use you to do something great with your life.
Our greatest need is not for happiness or contentment but forgiveness; therefore, we need a Saviour
All of history, prophesy and promise is completed in Jesus. Your whole life is completed in Jesus.
Every part of your life: your work, family, relationships, friends, memories and dreams are completed in Jesus.
Lord, thank you for this promise for the new year - that, in Jesus, you are with me. Help me to focus my life on you in the year ahead.
Genesis 1:1-2:17
3. Enjoy God's creation
You're not here by chance. This universe is God's creation. You're made in his image.
Every human being is created in his image and should be treated with dignity, respect and love.
Your ability to communicate with God is a reflection of the fact that you are made in his image.
work is a blessing: 'The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it (2:15)
Days of rest (days off, holidays) are days of special blessing: 'God blessed the seventh day and made it holy.' Holidays are holy days.
You do not need to know and experience evil. God wanted you to know only good.
Lord, thank you for this universe that you have made. Help me to keep well away form evil and to enjoy all the good things you have given to us enjoy.
